Onboarding our people

Our people have been instrumental in our rapid growth – their entrepreneurial spirit, culture and the experience we have across our team, have all contributed to our success.

The challenge

With 87 nationalities working across 49 countries, ensuring a smooth on-boarding process for an ever-expanding team – and inspiring people throughout their careers – has never been more important. This is why we place great emphasis on welcoming people into the Puma Energy family and ensuring they remain motivated and engaged.

What we did

From their first day at Puma Energy, we introduce new recruits to Puma “Must-Haves”, our on-boarding programme of training and support. In May 2017, we relaunched the programme as a full day’s interactive session and it’s already met with excellent feedback – even employees who have been with us for years are keen to get involved. Over the next year, we aim to translate it into Portuguese and Burmese. 

We have continued to invest heavily in training and development for our people, introducing a new Functional Training Matrix across Finance, Operations, Sales, HR, IT and Business Support. We also now offer training bundles that are automatically assigned to all new employees. And, to help people progress through the organisation, we introduced a standardised approach to Succession Planning whereby high potential employees are identified and supported with Individual Development Plans and assigned a mentor. 

Impact

One of our recruiting goals in 2017 was to maximise our effort in searching and short-listing qualified female candidates for open opportunities across all Puma locations. Therefore, we are proud to say that in 2017, 25% of Puma Energy employees are women.

Ensuring we remain an employer of choice for talented graduates is critical to our success. So, we are pleased to see our relationships with higher education establishments going from strength to strength in 2017. Highlights include our Internship Day and MBA career week at HEC Paris, a Puma Energy Evening at London Business School and an African Students event for the top eight universities in Europe.
